What's involved.

A back boiler sits in the fireplace, behind a gas fire. It usually heats a hot water cylinder, often with a cold water tank in the loft.

Replacing one with a combi is a bigger job than a straight swap. Here's what happens:

  • The gas fire comes out, and the back boiler behind it.
  • The new combi goes somewhere it can vent outside, often the kitchen. Tom suggests the best spot from your photos.
  • The pipework is changed so the combi heats your water as you use it. The cylinder and loft tank aren't needed any more.
  • Everything we include with every boiler: a system flush, filters, a thermostat, Gas Safe notification and the warranty registered for you.

The back boiler conversion is £1,920 on top of the boiler price. With our cheapest boiler, the Glow-worm Compact, that's £4,320 all in. The receipt shows how it adds up. You'll see your own version, with any smart thermostat or powerflush you choose, in the quote tool.

How much does back boiler replacement cost?

With us, from £4,320 fitted, inc VAT. That's a Glow-worm Compact combi plus £1,920 for taking the back boiler out and converting to a combi. With a Vaillant, it's the Vaillant price plus the same £1,920.

Does the gas fire have to come out?

Yes. A back boiler sits behind the fire and is built into it, so the fire comes out with it.

Where does the new boiler go?

Somewhere it can vent outside, often the kitchen. Tom suggests the best spot from your photos and it's on your quote before you say yes.

Can I keep my hot water cylinder?

A combi heats water as you use it, so you don't need the cylinder or the tank in the loft any more. You get that cupboard space back.
